Field Day From an Apartment: The Scoring Favors the Small Station
How a restricted-space operator plays ARRL Field Day: the power multiplier that rewards low power, running Class E from home versus going portable, and the battery and antenna that fit.

ARRL runs Field Day the fourth full weekend of June, and it is the one operating weekend where a restricted-space station is not starting from behind. The scoring is built around a power multiplier, and the multiplier pays you for running low power into a compromised antenna: the exact station most apartment and HOA operators already own. A 5-watt station on a battery outscores a 100-watt station on mains, contact for contact, by a wide margin. That is not a philosophical position about QRP. It is arithmetic in the rules.
The power multiplier is the whole game
Field Day gives every contact a base value, then multiplies your total by a single power multiplier tied to how much power you ran and where it came from. The tiers, in the current rules:
- Over 100 watts: multiplier of 1.
- 100 watts or less: multiplier of 2.
- 5 watts or less, powered by something other than commercial mains or a motor generator (a battery, solar, or wind): multiplier of 5.
The base values reward digital and CW on top of that. A phone contact is worth one point, a CW or digital contact two. Stack the two together and the picture is stark. A 5-watt battery station earns ten points for a digital contact. A 100-watt mains station earns four for the same contact. A station running an amplifier earns two. The low-power operator needs fewer than half the contacts to match the high-power score, and the gear that gets them there is a battery they buy once.
That is the part worth sitting with. Everywhere else in the hobby, your antenna constraint costs you. On Field Day, the constraint you already operate under, low power, lines up with the multiplier that scores highest. Verify the exact values on the current year's rule sheet before you commit to a class, because the numbers are set each year, but the structure has held for a long time: less power, more multiplier.

Two ways to play it from a restricted space
There are two honest paths for a small-space operator, and they teach different things.

Class E: your existing antenna, one battery
Class E is a home station running on emergency power. For a restricted-space operator it is the low-friction entry: you keep the antenna you already fought for, the attic wire, the balcony magnetic loop, or the stealth vertical, and you swap the wall supply for a battery. That one change moves you out of Class D (home, commercial power) into Class E, makes you eligible for the emergency-power bonus, and if you hold output at 5 watts it stacks the 5x multiplier on top.
The battery math is friendlier than it looks at QRP. A 5-watt rig draws two to three amps on transmit and well under one amp on receive, and you are not transmitting the whole 24 hours: realistic transmit duty across a casual digital effort is low. A 12-amp-hour LiFePO4 pack carries a QRP digital station through the weekend with margin, and recharges from a small solar panel if you want the alternate-power bonus as well. The Bioenno 12Ah BLF-1212A is the common choice: LiFePO4 holds a nearly flat voltage until it is almost empty, weighs about half what an equivalent sealed lead-acid pack does, and is safe to run indoors. A 100-watt effort is a different power budget entirely, and the reason most small-space Class E stations settle at QRP is simple: the battery to run 100 watts for a day is heavy, expensive, and pointless when the multiplier already favors 5 watts.

Going portable: the release valve
The other path removes the constraint instead of scoring within it. Class B is one or two operators, portable, on battery. Pack a rig, a battery, and a resonant wire, drive to a park or a friend's unrestricted yard, and for 24 hours you run the full-size antenna your lot will never allow. No CC&R, no shared wall, no neighbor's television to worry about.
The standard portable antenna is an end-fed half-wave: a single wire fed through a 49:1 transformer, resonant on 40, 20, 15, and 10 meters with no tuner in the chain. The EFHW-4010P is a 200-watt version of exactly that, which covers any QRP or 100-watt Field Day rig with headroom. Support the wire as a sloper off a tree branch, or run it vertical up a fiberglass mast. A Jackite 20-foot fiberglass pole is non-conductive, collapses to about four feet for the car, and holds an end-fed wire high enough to matter.
Here is the reason to do it at least once: a full-size resonant wire in the clear outperforms your best indoor compromise by a margin you can hear. Field Day becomes the calibration check on how much your constraints actually cost you the other 51 weekends of the year. Some operators come home and accept their indoor setup as good enough. Others come home and finally take the antenna decision tree seriously about getting one real wire outside. Either answer is worth the drive.
The rig either path wants
Both paths want a radio that runs efficiently off a battery, which describes most modern portable HF gear. Two rigs cover the range for a small-space operator.
The Icom IC-705 is the natural Field Day rig: 10 watts, all HF bands plus VHF and UHF, an internal battery, and a built-in spectrum scope that helps you find the pockets of open frequency on a band that is wall-to-wall stations for 24 hours. It is expensive, but it is one radio for portable Field Day and everyday indoor operating both.
The Xiegu G90 is the value pick. It puts out 20 watts, which you dial back to 5 for the multiplier, and its built-in tuner handles the marginal match an indoor antenna often presents if you are running Class E at home. At roughly a third the price of the IC-705 it is the rig to buy if Field Day is your reason to add a portable-capable radio you will also use the rest of the year.
Digital modes are how you bank the 5x multiplier fastest. FT8 and FT4 decode below the noise floor, so 5 watts into a compromise antenna keeps making contacts long after the same power on voice has run out of runway. Sweep the antenna before the clock starts
Whatever antenna you bring, check its match before 1800 UTC Saturday, not after. An end-fed that got kinked in the go-bag, or an indoor loop detuned by a bookshelf someone moved, does not announce itself. It quietly costs you contacts inside a 24-hour window you cannot extend. A NanoVNA-H4 sweeps resonance and SWR without transmitting, in a couple of minutes, for under $80. Do it the Thursday before. Finding a bad match at your kitchen table is a fix. Finding it at 1801 UTC is a lost afternoon.
What I would do
For a first Field Day from a restricted space, stay home and run Class E: QRP digital, on a battery, into the antenna you already have. It costs one battery, it teaches you your station's real endurance away from the wall, and the 5x multiplier means a modest contact count still posts a respectable score. The next year, go portable Class B once, to feel what a full-size wire in the open does for the same 5 watts.
Field Day is not a survival exercise, and it does not need to be dressed up as one. It is a contest weekend whose own scoring quietly rewards the small station: low power, careful antenna work, every dB earned.
