smallspaceham is live
Restricted-space ham radio has a dedicated site. What we cover and where to start.
You have a license. You live in an HOA, a condo, or a small lot. The antenna problem is not abstract for you -- it is in the CC&R, it is in the landlord's no-modification clause, it is in the building manager's interpretation of "no external modifications."
This site covers that problem specifically.
What's here
Guides -- step-by-step walkthroughs for specific installation scenarios: attic dipoles, magnetic loops on balcony rails, flagpole verticals that satisfy dual-use clauses, indoor HF wire runs. Each guide covers the physical install, the estimated performance trade-off, and the HOA language it does or doesn't run afoul of.
Articles -- roundups of specific gear categories (magnetic loop antenna roundup, SDR options for apartment operators, QRP rigs that work well when your antenna is compromised). Affiliate-linked where relevant, disclosed where it applies.
Decision guides -- cornerstone content for the constraint navigation problem. Starting with antenna selection under a total ban, then working through negotiation strategies, PRB-1 application, and the Parity Act. These are the pieces that exist nowhere else with this specificity.
What this isn't
Not a general ham radio site. Not a vendor blog. Not emergency preparedness content. Not a beginner's guide to ham radio -- if you found this site, you probably already have your ticket. The assumption throughout is that you know Ohm's law, you know what a repeater is, and you need help with the specific problem of operating legally in a space that was not designed with ham radio in mind.
Start here
If you don't know what PRB-1 says yet, start there. The Parity Act (2017) extended PRB-1 to HOA-governed properties. Those two documents are the foundation for any conversation you'll have with an HOA compliance officer.
If you already know the legal framework and you're shopping for an antenna: the guides section is being built out starting with the most common scenarios.
